
High-altitude freezes every night. What does that do to masonry?

Why it happens in Colorado Springs: Altitude is the multiplier here. At 6,000 feet the temperature crosses freezing more often than in any large city we measured: clear high-desert nights freeze what the strong daytime sun just thawed, sometimes daily for months. Masonry that would age gently at sea level runs through decades of freeze cycles in a few years, which is why crown condition matters more in this city than almost anywhere.
What fixes it, and what it costs
At altitude the freeze-thaw cycle can run nightly for months (strong sun thaws what clear nights refreeze), so condition is everything: a sound crown with an overhang, tight joints, and a breathable water repellent once they are sound. The same chimney that suffers open-jointed will shrug the altitude off maintained. The mountain supplies the test either way.
