Every state page is written from that state's own weather and housing records rather than from a template, because a freeze-thaw winter and a humid one break a chimney in completely different ways — and knowing which one you live in changes what is worth asking a contractor. The figure beside each state is the one that decides it.
Northeast
The oldest housing stock in the country, and winters that cross freezing constantly.
Midwest
Century masonry built around coal, and the hardest freeze-thaw cycles east of the Rockies.
South
Water rather than frost — storm-driven rain, humidity, and a lot of newer construction.
West
The widest range there is: mountain states that freeze hard, deserts that never do.
Freeze figures are NOAA daily observations from each state's primary metro weather station; housing figures are US Census state records. They describe a market, not a building — only an inspection tells you about your own chimney.
