Using a modern high-strength mix inverts the system: the joint becomes the hardest element, the brick becomes the sacrificial one, and the faces spall off within a few winters around perfectly intact grey lines. We are called to fix that outcome regularly and it is almost always recent work rather than old neglect.

Ottawa has roughly 30 days a year that never rise above freezing, and mortar will not cure through them. That makes the working window clear: masonry from spring through early autumn, sweeping and camera work all year. A crown recast quoted in November genuinely may have to wait for spring. Anyone who offers to lay mortar in the middle of a hard freeze is telling you something about their work. Beyond the weather, the practical answer is late summer for anything you can plan. The first cool evening of the year is when the whole city remembers the fireplace at once, and a two-week wait becomes normal. Booking before that means anything the inspection finds still has time to be repaired before you want to use it.

If the finding means the fireplace should not be used (a breached liner, a blocked flue, a crown letting water into the stack) we say so plainly and put it in writing.
